I'm trying to design a mechanism that is quite difficult to think
through so I'm looking in a mechanism book for some inspiration.
Sometimes it takes a while to work out the funtions from just diagrams
and I'm wondering if anyone has come across a DVD that shows animations
of random mechanisms?

This may help you get started. It is an atlas of the motion characteristics
of four-bar linkages usually referred to as coupler curves. The curves show
a trace of a point on the link of a four bar mechanism as the input crank is
rotated.

Many different linkage geometries are included in the atlas. If this
doesn't help you, perhaps you could tell us a little more about what you are
trying do come up with.

Here's another possible aid for you in some freeware dynamic simulation
software. You would have to input the mechanism to see the simulation.
