I need some authoritative information, like a curve, which shows the
temp. of structural steel, vs. its load-bearing capacity. I don't
think I am after tensile strength here, but the tendency of a steel
load-bearing beam in a buiding to buckle under heavy weight as it is
heated. Is significant strength lost before it reaches a temp at which
it begins to glow red? Thanks

This link will take you to a pdf file of Mil Handbook 5 which is a military
spec for metallic alloys. On page 2-27 there is a plot showing the effect
of temperature on the strength of low alloy steel. It shows that at 1200
degrees, which is the temperature at which the steel just starts showing a
dull red glow, the yield strength of the steel is reduced to 1/4 of what it
is at room temperature.
